Postdoctoral position(s) will be immediately available in Dr. Rui Zhang’s group at the Washington University in St. Louis. The lab is situated within the WU School of Medicine campus. In the latest (2023-2024) rankings by USNEWS, WashU ranks #15 in Biological Sciences and #5 in Medical School (research).

Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) currently has a Titan Krios with K2 & Falcon4 detectors, a Glacios with autoloader and K3 & Falcon4 detectors (for sample screening and data collection), and a modern JEOL-1400 microscope (for negative stain EM). WUSM also offers a state-of-the-art facility for cellular imaging.

Dr. Zhang did his Ph.D. with Prof. Wah Chiu at Baylor College of Medicine (now at Stanford University), and his postdoc with Prof. Eva Nogales at UC Berkeley. Both Drs. Chiu and Nogales are members of National Academy of Sciences and prestigious leaders in the cryo-EM field.

Dr. Zhang’s group primarily use high-resolution single particle cryo-EM to pursue the native structures of macromolecular complexes that are directly isolated from various organisms, ranging from green algae to mammals. Most of our current projects are related to microtubules and cilia. There will also be plenty of opportunities to work on other biological system through local collaborations.

Three types of postdoc candidates are preferred:
1) Structural biologist with experience in cryo-EM/cryo-ET
2) Protein biochemist
3) Computer science background with prior experience on image processing
